└──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
I. Introduction:
A. Tikler is a utility to help manage names, addresses, phone numbers
and the like. With a modem, tikler becomes a telephone dialer with
support up to COM4. If you need a nice lookin general 'people info'
manager, then tikler's for you.
Tikler is a 'search-based' database. I personally HATE scrolling
through screens of names to choose which record I want to access
or dial. In Tikler, all record-access functions are based on a
'search string'. If my guess is right, you probably have some
idea which number you want to dial, or which record you want to
edit. So say you have a record which reads like this in the data
file:
Name: John Smith, PhD
Address: 123 Elm Street
Anytown, USA 12345
Business/Title: Friend
Phone Number: (123)456-7890
Notes: Great Guy
Ok, you have 10,000 records in file and you want to access this
record. When Tikler says "Enter Search String: " you could enter
any one of these to have this record brought up:
john
JOHn
Any

Color (CGA,EGA,VGA,sVGA) Monitor

III. Installation:
UnZip (or copy) TIKLER.EXE into the directory you wish to run it
from. Once there, simply type TIKLER and press return.
IV. Running Tikler: After the brief introduction screen is displayed.
The Main Menu will be displayed. Each option is discussed below:
A. Names:
1. Dial a Number: Choosing this option will cause the program to
prompt you for a search string. Enter any combination of letters,
numbers (don't worry about upper or lower case) which will help
tikler to narrow the number of records you want to access. The
first occurence of your search string will be displayed (if
found). Press F2 to dial, Esc to exit to the menu or any other
key to advance to the next record containing your search string.
Once dialed, the program will prompt you for a log file entry if
you have set this configuration option on.
2. Search Records: This is designed as a 'quick look-up' of
several records at once. After entering your search string, all
records containing that search string will have their name,
office/business notes and telephone number displayed. If there is
not enough room to display all matches of your search string, the
program will pause and wait for you to press a key before
continuing display.
3. Change Records: Choose this option to edit information
already in your database. Then enter the search string of the
record(s) you want to modify. Tikler will then bring up the edit
screen and display the first occurence where it found your search
string. Pressing F1 will put you in edit mode with most all
standard wordprocessing editing features to change information in
each field. Pressing Esc will abort the operation and return you
to the main menu. Any other key will advance the program and
display the next record where your search string is found.
4. Add a Record: Choosing this option appends a blank record at
the end of the file and puts you into the full screen edit mode.
Pressing F10 will save your information, pressing Escape will
abort the addition.
5. Erase a Record: Choose this option when you want to delete a
record. Then enter a search string to help Tikler find your
record. The first record containing your search string will be
displayed on the screen. If this isn't the record you want to
erase, press RETURN and the next record containing your search
string will be displayed. Press F1 when you see the record you
want to delete, Tikler will then ask you to confirm your decision
to delete the record. Once you confirm it, the record will be
deleted and the file rewritten to exclude that file.
B. Print:
1. Print Report: Choose this option to print your report. You
will be asked if you would like to re-sort the database before
printing. If you choose 'Y'es, you will be given a small menu to
select the field you want to print on. Choose your field and
press RETURN. Your database will be re-sorted and you will be
asked to confirm your decision to print.
2. Print Selecteds: This option is essentially the same as the
'Print Report' selection. The only difference is that you will be
prompted for a search string. Enter your search string and you
will be prompted for a sort same as above. Each record containing
the search string (once again, case INsensitive) will be printed
in the same form as the regular report.
C. Settings:
1. View: Choose this option to display how the program is
configured. This is display only. Press any key to return to the
main menu.
2. Report Title: Choose this option to change the title of your
report.
3. Comm Port: Choose this option to select the communications
port your modem is connected to. Valid numbers are 1 - 4.
4. Log File Entries: Choose this option to toggle the option of
making a log file of dialed calls. Press either Y or N depending
on your preference.
5. Startup for Print: This option gives you the ability to send
1 set of 2 decimal codes to your printer upon startup of
printing. Refer to your printer manual for the values for each
style of print.
6. Reset For Printer: This option gives you the ability to send
1 set of 2 decimal codes to your printer upon termination of a
report printing routine.
7. Modem Init: This is the modem initialization code sent to
your specified comm port upon commencement of dialing a number.
8. Printer Ejects: This option gives you the ability to specify
when form feeds are sent to the printer when printing a report.
D. Exit:
Take a guess..... It is upon termination of the program that your
new configuration settings (if changed) are written to disk.
V. Notes:
In writing shareware, I find that little or no response is normally
given to the author. I really, really want to hear from you;
comments, suggestions, bitches, gripes etc. The amount of reponses I
get will determine whether or not there will be any future releases.
I can be reached by either writing to the address listed at the end
of the program, or by message on most any of Albuquerque's finder
BBS's.
Happy Trails!
